Study of a sculpture at the Parthenon Museum.

On my way to bigger size work, but it's fun to paint postcards.

This is very interesting, Frieda, and well done if it is only A6 size. I´m looking forward to be seeing Antonins comments. We can all learn from this.

All the best

I just cannot associate "study" of a sculpture being painted ... where a head and an arm is missing ( which is not strange on a sculpt.) but how can We make it into a life with colors! ( but it's a great model to study eighter a pencil or so...)...however it creates a bloc in my head how to look at it...

Take it as we are sitting together on a chairs and sharing our looks at things in art world!

Oo, now I understand! Ok, let's sit in that chair and have a cool drink (right now at 20:00, it's 35 degrees here in the shadow, and if I say stupid things forgive me, it's because my brain is melting:-)).

Maybe my answer will disappoint you, but to be hounest I started to paint this rather spontaneously, without thinking, more like a sketch.

I would like to paint a big scenery inspired on the Greek mythology and I want to use elements like this sculpture in it. Before to start this 'big' project I need to be prepared :-) some sketches, some reading, some painting...it's growing...

Maybe I should not have used the word 'study' ? But I could not find another suitable English word for it.... I should have given a little more explanation of course.

I realise this painting is now a little floating inside an empty context, no story behind... and maybe that's why you don't see a life with colours?

But personally I don't mind to PAINT a sketch; cause then you have to observe your subject very well and detailed (not possible to use a gum) and even a sculpture is very much 'alive' with a whole range of colour tones, depending on the light and also the perception and even the mood of the painter. Probably today I would paint this completely different, maybe I would allow myself more freedom instead of sticking to the exact shape of the sculpture. A lot of maybe's :-) but I guess that's normal, to paint or to look at a painting is very much subjective and I'm glad for that... if it would not be like this life would be soooo boring. So thanks for your answer, it refreshed my brain :-)

Hi Frieda,

I understood the reason of your picture. I got accustomed to preparing one or some little studies if I prepare for a bigger picture. Even stilus, even topic, even colour study. It is not essential that the picture should be totally worked out, believes not too that aim. I like the antique effect here study, the few colours suffice, indeed more colours would be disturbing possibly. This work is interesting for me.

Have a nice weekend

This is so graceful, and I am so impressed by the composition the anatomy you managed to capture as well as the light and dark contrasts.
